- Plasma torus (tokamak model), Ø470 sphere in a mirrored pyramid, 7 plasma tubes in a bar counter, a fusor
For Russia’s museum of nuclear energy we created several plasma exhibits. The centrepiece is a plasma torus: a glowing ring of bent glass modelled on a tokamak, the machine in which scientists hold red-hot plasma for nuclear fusion. The museum ordered two of these rings: one stands in the permanent exhibition, the other travels with the touring show.
To bend the sections of the torus we designed our own linear oxygen burners and gas mixers — a rig like this cannot be bought. It burns 250 litres of oxygen per minute and works together with a large kiln.
The museum also features a Ø470 plasma sphere inside a mirrored glass pyramid and a fusor that imitates cold fusion.
A separate piece is the palette display case: seven plasma tubes of different colours built into a curved counter, showing how the gas changes the colour of the plasma. It shows how plasma can become part of an exhibition’s architecture rather than simply stand next to it.
